MADD hosted national events in Dallas, New York and San Diego as well as local events in cities and towns across the country. Congress made it official by passing a resolution deeming April 21 as PowerTalk 21 day.

I have a 20-year-old daughter of my own, and I know how hard this topic can be. Kids don’t come with instruction manuals. That’s why MADD developed the Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence™ handbook. It provides valuable insights into teens and tips on communicating about a tough topic in a way that can reduce your child’s risk of drinking by up to 30 percent. I’ve used it myself and trust me…it’s worth downloading (which you can do here).

We’re also providing free parent workshops in cities across the country. I was lucky enough to host one in San Diego. The feedback was unanimously positive. Parents appreciated the help tackling this difficult topic. Click here to see if there is an upcoming workshop in your area.

If you missed PowerTalk 21 day, don’t worry. This can’t be a one time conversation. Parents need to talk about this important topic with their kids early and often. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood echoed these sentiments in his blog, reminding parents that “every day is a good day for starting that discussion.”

Check out some of our pictures from events across the country and mark your calendar for next year’s PowerTalk 21 on April 21, 2012! In the meantime, keep talking …
<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qe4ouf1osqw/TbmtI888M9I/AAAAAAAAAXM/IDEYQwMXo28/s200/215884_10150171338632482_43754732481_6725229_2968589_n.jpg" alt="" width="179" height="112" border="0"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600697980924212178" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" /><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KAEu_tD9y7k/TbmtQvnX1RI/AAAAAAAAAXU/EmoMnmkoLpI/s200/221688_10150171338892482_43754732481_6725235_5099188_n.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="100" border="0"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600698114783040786" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-khbnUiK0YMs/TbmuHyIhniI/AAAAAAAAAXc/QKnHMvUwiOg/s200/MADD%2BPowerTalk21%2BApr%2B20%2B2011%2B065.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600699060351770146" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--dvCUoMnwDM/TbmuY-4jkFI/AAAAAAAAAXk/zkCbgEli_Ws/s200/MADD%2BPowerTalk21%2BApr%2B20%2B2011%2B059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600699355832225874" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 100px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bwXWC6jMCQU/TbmxujoxLiI/AAAAAAAAAYU/vigX7PiAzac/s200/PowerTalk21%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600703025010257442" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j29l01ZLqo4/TbmxiN0bD2I/AAAAAAAAAYM/GnVbyPnbFBM/s200/NEwspaper%2Bphoto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600702812995129186" />

PowerTalk 21 is Today!

Today is the day...the day to start talking to your teens if you haven't already. Communities across the country are rallying to keep our teens safe from the drug that kills more youth than all other drugs combined--alcohol.

Raising a teen isn't easy and they don't come with instruction manuals. That's why MADD teamed up with Dr. Robert Turrisi of Penn State Univ to create the Power of Parents, It's Your Influence handbook. This handbook is easy to use and includes proven techniques to improve communications between parents and their teens, often resulting in a 30% reduction in underage drinking.

You can find a FREE 30 minute workshop in your area where you can attend and get started with the handbook. If there is not a workshop in your area, you can download the handbook at madd.org/powerofparents.

Thanks to Nationwide Insurance, our wonderful Presenting Sponsor, and the GM Foundation, our supporting sponsor, we are able to offer these tools at no charge. I asked what she meant and she said the girls start getting mean and clicks start emerging. She advised to get to know all the parents and start talking to one another because as she put it "I want to know if my daughter is ever the mean girl." "You'd tell me right?" I told her yes. I thought to myself, third grade? What in the world. She went on to explain, as well as one of the teachers, that hormones start and kids start getting more and more a sense of self and the comparisons start and peer pressure, I suppose. Knowing their friends and knowing what is on their minds, even in elementary school, sets up a great conversation line for future situations. I want my oldest to hold her own and have her own confidence, not look to clique groups to give that sense of identity to her.

Check out these <a href="http://www.madd.org/Under-21/Elementary/Programs/View-Program.aspx?program=4"target="_blank">offerings for schools trying to reach elementary students about peer pressure and their brain. This article about the new Ron Howard show <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/03/by_sara_sarasohn_parenthood_th.html"target="_blank">Parenthood shines a light on how TV portrays tight-knit, close in proximity families helping each other out, arguing and generally always around. This is not reality for most people. Relatives live all over the country and that family bonding and help with children is from afar and electronic. Do kids who have a lot of family support around them, do better? Do families that have a lot of family (or friend) support do better? All of the tough situations in life may just be a bit easier to confront, tackle and recover with a strong family and friendship support system.

This Weekend

How many parties did your teen have a chance to go to this weekend where alcohol was served? Underage drinking and parties seem par for the course for many college kids, but if they are under 21, they are not suppose to be drinking according to the law. Rather than look the other way, colleges see where problems continue to lurk when underage drinking runs rampant: bad grades, sexual assaults, injuries, etc. Now, many colleges will tell parents what their teens are up to in order for the parents to join forces with them to protect the youth. I suppose the adage, "you can run but you can't hide" comes to mind and teens should take note. I know I'd want my teen's college to call me if they were drinking. Sounds like a perfect bonding time conversation. Ideally, parents would heed the advice while teens are high school and check out www.thepowerofparents.org and get a jumpstart on setting the rules early for their kids.

Your shopping at a teen store, you need a flask, right?

Received a media call today from an outlet requesting comment about <a href="http://wbztv.com/consumer/clairs.selling.flasks.2.920924.html"target="_blank">bedazzled flasks being sold at retail outlet aimed at older teens. I wasn't too surprised given we've received these calls quite a lot over the years, especially prior to prom and graduation. It's not bad enough that thousands of people are impacted by underage drinking each year and that it is illegal, but somehow making flasks available to those young teen girls hovering in the late teens and pre-21 range, seems like a good thing? I had that talk...again...while my daughter was home from college break. While she always tells me, "I know Mom. I don't drink", she also told me that she does go to parties and there is often booze. She is always the designated driver and has found ways to say "no thanks" without being seen as a goody two shoes. Your teen can do this, too. Parties are happening almost every night and especially on New Year's Eve and this is an especially deadly time of year. Remind the kids--underage drinking is not acceptable. Remind them to never get in the car with anyone who has been drinking. And most importantly, don't ever put your kids (or another persons kids) in the car with anyone who has been drinking alcohol. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

http://ping.fm/AhjIh "Why do parents drive drunk"?

http://ping.fm/JRhPu
why do parents drive drunk? Leandra was just 11 years old when her friends mother flipped her car killing Leandra. Young people that drink often do become adults that that drive drunk. Not all the time, but a lot of the time.

Another case out of New York that caught the world's attention was that of a mother driving impaired killing herself and three other adults and four children. We received a ton of calls about women and drunk driving following this horrific crash. It is important to know that often these things don't just happen but rather there are patterns of early drinking and impairment that go unchecked and could result in future destruction of families.

As a parent of three girls, I too want to make sure they understand it is about drinking underage and it is about all of the other problems that often stem from that later in life. While this article in TIME is a bit dated, it still rings true today. I have some time before the girls are in high school but my husband and I are committed to protecting them and guiding them to make smart choices.

Family dinner--do you eat with your kids?

This interesting fact just came in an email:

Compared to teens who have frequent family dinners (five or more per week), those who have infrequent family dinners (fewer than three per week) are more than one and a half times likelier to use alcohol? This according to the Importance of Family Dinners V, a new report by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University.

It seems like common sense that if you eat with your kids, they'll be less like to use alcohol. But, we all get so busy with work, school, sports, church/synagogue that sometimes....OK many times for some families....it is just easier to drive through. If that is how it works in your family, don't despair. You can still talk to your kids about underage drinking in the car. Use the conversation starters that are on www.thepowerofparents.org to give you some hints.

With my own daughter, I found that time driving in the car with her was the best time to talk. She often told me things that were really bugging her or going on in her life while we were driving somewhere. Just be sure to turn off the TV/game system if you have one of those in your car so you have his/her full attention. Pop chats, as I like to call them, can be very effective.

Challenges

November 2, 2009

So, my 5 nearly 6 year old daughter has a mind of her own. The only problem is she influences her little sister, often into doing things I don't want them to do. The older daughter says she forgot, or didn't hear me and quickly heads down the street and out of our front yard nearly out of view with little sister in tow. She is adventurous but doesn't understand what could happen and as I call for her to return she sees she is in trouble. All of this to say, she is nearly six, but won't I deal with same kind of thing the older she gets, say 13, 15, etc? According to this Wall Street Journal blog, she could become a great leader because of her pushing boundaries attitude. Listen/watch for more media as we roll out the parent handbook within a month.

Oh yeah...there are also several bloggers on other "Mom" sites blogging about the launch.

Red Ribbon Week

October 25, 2009

Many schools around the country recognize National Red Ribbon Week this time of month. Crazy socks, buttons, pins, anything to remind elementary kids to never do drugs or alcohol. It is interesting that parents are a great influence on their children's alcohol use. Consider the fact that as a mom, you especially, have lots of power to dissuade your child to not drink underage. You may decide not to do crazy sock day at home to get the point across, but it just may work as a reminder on top of your call to action in this area for the little ones. Now, the older ones are another matter. I'm not there yet, but have heard. One day at a time.

Welcome

Thanks for visiting us at MADD Parents!
